Gyroplanes / RotorcraftThe certification situation for LSA gyroplanes is confusing, to put it mildly. Because the FAA's Rotorcraft Directorate wanted nothing to do with the Sport Pilot rule, rotorcraft were specifically prohibited from being certificated as S-LSA. Add to this a legal Catch-22 that prohibited manufacturers from selling E-LSA gyroplane kits until they had developed and had certificated at least one S-SLA (which is prohibited under the Sport Pilot rule), and you start to grasp the complexity and frustration of the situation with regard to LSA rotorcraft. The situation is still in a state of flux, and we recommend that you check out the Popular Rotorcraft Association's site if you want the latest information. In the meantime, here are a few rotorcraft that can be legally operated by Sport Pilots who possess the appropriate endorsements.
